Martin is an idea I've had for
quite a while now, based around the songs of Soft Cell. The setting of the
show was inspired by their debut album, while the main protagonist, Martin,
was inspired from their second album, The Art Of Falling Apart. Over time,
various songs have rearranged themselves into a story in my head, that one
day, hopefully people will hear. Until then, this is a page solely for the
use of Phil Young in the writing of this project. Please do not download any
of the songs here and indeed, go and buy their albums.
Please note - this is all a work in progress and
permissions will be sought for the material on this page once the writing
stage of this project is complete. No inference of ownership of anything
Soft Cell related is implied here.

Stage is dark as the music begins. The
Narrator signs his parts, while Martin is acting them out with a large
screen behind him allowing the various pieces to be set in varying
backgrounds. Ensemble cast flitter in and out when appropriate.
Martin is a boy with problems
Martin has a family history
Martin has too many nightmares
He lives in a fantasy
There's a danger that he'll take too far
His morbid curiosity
He's seen too many creepy films
He's read too many books
Martin sleeps with all the lights on
Martin's seen too many looks
He lives out a strange obsession
Tries hard to resist
But Martin needs his strange obsession
To exist
(Kill, kill, kill) - (voices from the side)
He's far too pale and far too frail
To be a normal boy
There's something shining in his eyes
The things he'd like to say
Martin had a lot to live down
Growing up in a no name town (lyric changed)
Torches burning in the trees
The shivering lust of blood
He's the star of many horror movies
But deep inside he's good
There's an illness flowing through him
That's there all the time
And though he watches and he waits
He knows he's not to blame
The face at the window
The hand under the bed
Martin has hallucinations
Dreams that he's dead
He finds the hunger's at it's worst
When he's in bed
(Kill, kill, kill) - (voices from the side)
He's finding hard to keep control
He knows it won't be long
And his tongue rolls over his dry lips
And the voice lingers on

DIRECTION
Not sure when this occurs yet. I like it
being before the Martin song, but the idea of that was to have something
to shut the audience up, so this may have to be the first shrink session
we see him have. The stage would be in darkness, as would the audience.
You’d only hear Martin’s voice and meanwhile it is the perfect time
for a set change, if not too noisy.
Martin
Darkness…. I wake up and all I see is
darkness…. It’s that kind of darkness that’s so much darker even
after you’ve opened your eyes… and then you wish they were still
closed, because in the darkness, the monsters come. I reach over, grasping
at air. I know the alarm should be there. I know the bedside light should
be there, but the only thing I can feel is the emptiness. I reach out
further and they’ve always been there, right at that distance, why aren’t
they there? I start to panic and try again, I reach even further,
desperate for that click and the light that follows, the light that will
scare the monsters away. They fear the light, like I feel the darkness.
I slowly sit up, listening, sweating. The
chill of the air freezes each bead of perspiration like a frozen bullet
sliding down my body. I’m waiting for my eyes to grow accustomed to the
dark, but it doesn’t happen. I know something is wrong. I slowly move
across the bed, seeking the edge and the sanctuary of the floor and the
firm ground that can once again establish where I am, my place in the
world, my place in my room. I find the edge and slowly slide my legs over
the side and wait for the welcome touch of the floor on my soul (yes
spelling correct). I know where the floor should be, just like I know
where the light should be, where the alarm should be, but there’s
nothing, just the darkness. My body slides off the bed like it’s being
dragged away by a monster. I’m caught in a vacuum, my feet hurtling
through the one thing left in my existence. Darkness.
Narrator
Interesting,
Direction
The Girl is in her home as the narrator
sings the song and she acts out the varying things he describes.
Passing time in the afternoon
Cleaning the bathroom floor
Rearrange things in the dining room
Covers the chip on the kitchen door
The paperboy winks as he hands her a paper
He's cheekier every day
She undoes her apron and sings on the sofa
(changed to sings deliberately) Throws all her household chores away
I’m in a fantasy (lyric changed)
It's not so hard to see
That I am living a lie
I’ll never be the same
I shut my eyes again
Wave all my worries goodbye
Puts on her make-up
And smoothes down her dress
Practices the words to say (lyric changed)
She always had that spark of beauty (lyric changed) Escape is only a romance away Troubles come flooding back with her migraine
She trembles and shuts her eyes
It's a good thing that friends come in little bottles
Time to shake up and prepare for the lies
I’m in a fantasy (lyric changed)
It's not so hard to see
That I am living a lie
I’ll never be the same
I shut my eyes again
Wave all my worries goodbye
Pushing the hair back from her face
Shaping her thoughts in the sky
Heaven is through her kitchen window "Pity it's only a dream", she sighs (both)
Imagines herself as Elizabeth Taylor
The paperboy cycles away
She turns on the stove
Soon her husband is home "Hello dear, it's been such a long
day"
Direction
The Girl opens the door to welcome an
imaginary husband into the door - see last verse

The Narrator is with The Girl. He has
been talking to her. It is clear that he is her psychiatrist and that he
has had a thing for her. She has seen him before with her problems and he
has become emotionally attached and is worried now that she is interested
in Martin, both for her well being and also for himself, seeing his love,
once again falling out of his reach.
We've hit those depths again
Playing black games again
Black mellow lies
And the narrowing of eyes
Playing those games again
You hold the reins again
But then I turned the card
And you know I hit hard
Loving you, hating me It's the other side of love It's the side that you don't want to see
Shaking your head that way
It's so true when they say
That love is a pain in the heart
A pain that pulls apart I'm breaking rules again
You're breaking hearts again Pretend to despise
When there's love in your eyes
Loving you, hating me It's the other side of love It's the side that you don't want to see
Loving you, hating me It's the other side of love It's the side that you don't want to see
And I'm loving you And you're hating me

No idea how this is going to fit in but
think it must be done quite softly, possibly even vocal only in a sad
reflective way.
The other way is to have the Marilyn

it.

DIRECTION
I see this as possibly an almost ballet
style sequence. Probably sung by the Narrator
Searching through the memory books
Of photographs your lovers took
Why play the game of place the pain
When you end up feeling just the same
Anyway...
Sleep comes so slowly now
So hard to keep the eyelids down
And you're hoping soon to drown the sound
Of a voice you know that whispers in
Your mind...
Oh, it was a sad, sad day
The day you turned away
And there was nothing in your eye
You had told me once you found it impossible
To cry...
I know you've been there and back
I've been there too
But it was never really deep in you
To do those things you had to do...
And in your sleepy bedroom eyes
I saw the signs
And I lay awake all night
In the cold
Until the light burned my side
And there was nothing
There was nothing anymore...
And there was nothing
Not a feeling
As you glanced back from the door...
Move away to find another place
That illustrates your point of view
Surrounded by the little things
That re-assure
That reflect you...
Ooooo and there was nothing
And there was nothing in my heart
And there was nothing in my head
The light in your eyes is changing all the time
And I still have your smile
Burned into my mind...
Sunday morning going slow, I'm talking to
the radio
Clothes and records on the floor, the memories of the night before
Out in Clubland having fun and now I'm hiding from the sun
Waiting for a visitor though no-one knows I'm here for sure
Dancing, laughing, drinking, loving
And now I'm all alone in bedsit land
My only home
I think it's time to cook a meal to fill
the emptiness I feel
Spent my money going out, I've nothing in I'm left without
Clean my teeth and comb my hair and look for something new to wear
And start the nightlife over again and kid myself I'm having fun
Dancing, laughing, drinking, loving
And now I'm all alone in bedsit land
My only home
I look out from my window view that
really nothing else to do
Read a book maybe write a letter, mother, things are getting better
Watch the mirror count the lines, the battle scars of all the good times
Look around and I can see a thousand people just like me
Dancing, laughing, drinking, loving
And now I'm all alone in bedsit land
My only home
Dancing, laughing, drinking, loving
And now I'm all alone in bedsit land
My only home
Dancing, laughing, drinking, loving
DIRECTION
Sung by the Narrator as he sees The Girl
slipping from his grasp, probably in a session once it is established that
he is her shrink.
It was the heat of the night I think
Or it could've been the effect of the drink
But I had to brush away the flies
That started to collect around your eyes
I've still the taste of the sweat and the dust
You're still playing games and abusing my trust
In the heat of the night, in the glow of
the light
It's the back and the bite, that's feeling alright
Do you use up bodies like cigarettes
Do you need them for ego, do you need them for sex?
In the heat of the night, in the glow of
the light
It's the back and the bite, that's feeling alright
Do you use up bodies like cigarettes
Do you need them for ego, do you need them for sex?
It was a bite of a night gone wrong
And the effect of listening to negative songs
Stuck in a love scene from blood and sand
And the way the room keeps spinning around
Now I know what they mean by looks can kill
And they're having a strange effect on the way I feel
In the heat of the night, in the glow of
the light
It's the back and the bite, that's feeling alright
Do you use up bodies like cigarettes
Do you need them for ego, do you need them for sex?
In the heat of the night, in the glow of
the light
It's the back and the bite, that's feeling alright
Do you use up bodies like cigarettes
Do you need them for ego, do you need them for sex?
Oh, and you're moaning about your wasted
life
Lying there listening to "Spanish Eyes"
With the cups on the floor, and the plates in the sink
And the room full of smoke, and then you full of drink
You skin's going dry and the color of
sand
Ignore the cigarette burning your hand
You skin's going dry and the color of sand
Ignore the cigarette burning your hand
Now I know what they mean by looks can
kill
And they're having a strange effect on the way I feel
Now I know what they mean by looks can kill
And they're having a strange effect on the way I
On the way I, on the way I feel
Now I know, now I know what they mean
Now I know what they mean by
By looks can, by looks can kill, kill
Now I know, now I know what they mean by
looks can kill
DIRECTION
The Girl is dancing at a new club and
this is either sung by the owner and clients or TBA
Would you like to taste a little pain
From the fickle hand of fame
Aren't you happy that the road to success
Is littered with drugs and sex
It's all here for your delectation
In compromising situations
Let fallen heroes entertain you
Take a look
Nobody's gonna blame you
Say hello, le Grand Guignol
Say hello, le Grand Guignol
Say hello, to the broken people
The broken people
Snake dancers, sex changer
Come inside
It gets stranger and stranger
Got a lot of unpleasant surprises
Cruelty comes in all shapes and sizes
Say hello, le Grand Guignol
Say hello, le Grand Guignol
Say hello, to the broken people
The broken people
Say hello, le Grand Guignol
Say hello, le Grand Guignol
Say hello, to the broken people
The broken people
It's Grand Guignol
It's rock 'n' roll
It's vaudeville and burlesque
All of human life is here
In the theatre of the grotesque
The city has turned upside down
The circus lion is eating the clown
We're all delivered to the poison pens
And sacrificed to the pig with the lens
Say hello, le Grand Guignol
Say hello, le Grand Guignol
Say hello, to the broken people
The broken people
Say hello, le Grand Guignol
Say hello, le Grand Guignol
Say hello, to the broken people
The broken people
It's Grand Guignol
It's rock 'n' roll
It's vaudeville and burlesque
All of human life is here
In the theatre of the grotesque
This next song is a bit of a tongue
twister
But if I get all the words
Try to play this and sing at the same time
That's what rock and roll is all about
Always the dreamer, but never the dead
You had a rocky road mapped out somewhere in your head
Anyone in your way, was a spike in your side
With one hand in the wallet, you took them for the ride
You could look in their eyes, you
perfected a lie
Never gave them the chance to question why
If they hit on you then you slammed them right back
Never keeping their cool it was up and attack
You should have seen you when you were
eighteen
You were the toughest little fucker I've ever seen
And with each downfall you turned ten foot tall
The biggest kick in the balls you've ever been
And Dr Diablo's on his rounds again
Looking for blame and you know
That he'll diagnose pain again
Yeah, pain again
Narrow the sorrow, sick of the slick
Of the doors of discovery you had your pick
If they hit on you then you hit right back
Never keeping their cool, it was up and attack
You could look in their eyes, you
perfected a lie
Never gave them the chance to question why
If they hit on you then you hit them right back
Never keeping their cool it was up and attack
Whoa, you're looking so torrid today,
life
Has gone wild, no one blocks out the way
You even look good, so they say
A new lease of life flowed through your body today
Not that looks are all to go by, but anyway
The stuff is free and you can now go to
town
Building your life up and smashing it down
Building your life up and smashing it down
You couldn't escape from this fact of
life
That existing makes you a mess
That every decision or feeling or reason
Causes some sort of mental distress
You could look in their eyes, you
perfected a lie
Never gave them the chance to question why
If they hit on you then you hit right back
Never keeping their cool it was up and attack
Keep the cool for the fool
Keep the cool for the fool
Keep the cool for the fool
Keep the cool for the fool
Hey, hey
You couldn't escape from this fact of
life
That existing makes you a mess
That every decision or feeling or reason
Causes some sort of mental distress
You could look in their eyes, you
perfected a lie
Never gave them the chance to question why
If they hit on you then you hit right back
Never keeping their cool it was up and attack
Building your life up and smashing it
down
Building your life up and smashing it down
Yeah, building your life up and smashing it down
DIRECTION
Could be sung by the prostitute /
stripper colleague.
Numbers
Who's the person that you woke up next to today?
If you were any older
Then you'd know you'd have to pay your way
Well maybe you do already
But you make out they pay you
Did you ask yourself where did love go wrong with you?
Numbers
Don't tell me name, I don't want to know
And don't forget to take the reminders when you go
Good things had to end
And I was never any good at saying goodbye
Because when I say goodbye a silly thing happens
And I always cry
Numbers
You're looking so thin these days, are you doing speed?
(No, numbers)
Have you seen your face? Now you're really going seed
(Playing numbers)
Doing a nine to five in the day
And you never know their names
(Numbers)
Because names make a person real
And there's no real people in these games
Numbers
Pass them on and pass them by
Numbers
Never hold a good thing down for long
Numbers
Throw 'em away like Kleenex
Numbers
Pick them up and push them away
Numbers
Oh numbers
Until you wake up one day
And find that you're a number
Until you wake up one day
And find that you're a number
Until you wake up one day
And find that you're a number
Until you wake up one day
And find that you're a number
Body one, body two, body three, body four
Body one, body two, body three, body four
Numbers
Body one, body two, body three, body four
Body one, body two, body three, body four
Body one, body two, body three, body four
Body one, body two, body three, body four
DIRECTION
Sung by all three main characters Martin
has found out about her relationship with his and her shrink.
Standin' at the door
Of the Pink Flamingo
Crying in the rain
It was a kind of so so love
And I'm gonna make sure
It doesn't happen again
You and I had to be
The standing joke of the year
You were a run around
A lost and found
And not for me I feel
Take your hands
Off me, please
I don't belong to you, you see
And take a look in my face
For the last time
I never knew you
You never knew me
Say hello, goodbye
Say hello and wave goodbye
We tried to make it work
You in a cocktail skirt
And me in a suit
But it just wasn't me
You're used to wearing less
And now your life's a mess
So insecure you seem
Well I put up with all the scenes
And this is one scene
That's goin' to be played my way
Take your hands
Off me, please
I don't belong to you, you say
And take a look in my face
For the last time
I never knew you
You never knew me
Say hello, goodbye
Say hello and wave goodbye
Say hello and wave goodbye
Under the deep red light
I can see the make up sliding down
Well hey little girl
You will always make up
So take off that
Unbecoming frown
As for me well
I'll find someone
Who's not going cheap
In the sales
A nice little house wife
Who'll give me a steady life
And not keep going off the rails
Take your hands
Off me, please
I don't belong to you, you say
And take a look in my face
For the last time
I never knew you
You never knew me
Say hello, goodbye
Say hello and wave goodbye
Say hello and wave goodbye
Say hello and wave goodbye
Wave goodbye
Say hello and wave goodbye
Say hello, wave goodbye
Goodbye
Say goodbye
Say goodbye
We were born before the wind
Who were we to understand
We were born before the wind
Say goodbye
Through the rain, hail, sleet and snow
Say good bye
And I'm trying, trying, trying
To say goodbye
Say goodbye
Say goodbye
Say goodbye
In the wind and the rain my darling
Say goodbye
In the wind and the rain my darling
